The Andromeda Galaxy and Friends

The Andromeda Galaxy and Friends

The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is a very close grand design spiral galaxy and one of the few galaxies that are large enough and bright enough to be visible as a patch of light with the naked eye. M31 is also perhaps the most often published galaxy seen by the general populous as it tends to be shown frequently in popular magazines or TV shows whenever astronomy is discussed. Also show are M110, to the lower right and just outside of the halo of M31 stars, and M32 shown as a small but bright fuzzy patch to the left of the M31 core at the edge of the M31 halo. This picture shows a 2.5 degree wide part of the sky where north is to the right.
