The Three Bright Star Clusters of Puppis

The Three Bright Star Clusters of Puppis

In the northern area of the constellation of Puppis lay three good size star clusters that appear as a faint glow to the naked eye from a dark site. IMHO the star of the show is M46 which is a fine blanket of similar stars in the upper left. M46 from our viewpoint on Earth appears to contain the planetary nebula Ngc2438 shown on the upper right of M46 as a fuzzy doughnut. Then to the lower right we find M47 star cluster which has a great range of brightness to it's many stars and offers a dramatic view in a telescope. Just above the middle right of this picture lies the more 'quiet' Ngc2423 cluster to complete this cluster treo of bright clusters. There is one more much smaller and very dim cluster about half way between M46 and M47, can you see it?
