Leo Triplet With Other Dim Galaxies
The Leo Triplet gets its name from the 3 fairly bright galaxies in the constellation of Leo that are a popular target for spring. These three galaxies appear grouped in this 1.5 degree section seen in this photograph. Messier 66 and 65 are the brightest and appear near the right side with M66 below the more detailed M65. The dimmer but curious Ngc3628 just above center has an extremely faint 'tidal trail' of stars trailing off 45 degrees down and to the left of the galaxy. The tidal trail extends first fairly obvious then far fainter as it ends about 1/3 of the way up just inside the left of the picture. This picture hints at that faint trail and I hope to enhance this trail next year. In the bottom left quadrant there can be seen a large number of faint and small galaxies so when you see any fairly faint glow that does not have a bright center, that is likely a distant galaxy as well.
