The Nebula Surrounding the Cone Nebula
In the large but dim constellation of Monoceros just east of Orion lies a dim nebulous area called SH2-273. This area is best know because it contains the Christmas tree cluster, Ngc2264, with the Cone Nebula inverted at the top of the 'tree'. The Christmas Tree base is the very bright blue star near the upper middle and the tree top is down and to the left which is south. The top of the tree is met with the dark nebula known as the Cone Nebula that points up and to the right or north. One third of the picture lower than the cone is a tiny white wedge pointing to the lower left called Hubble's Variable Nebula. Another attraction is the wonderful blanket of fine golden stars that make up Cr105 seen 2/3 of the way to the right and near the middle. Lastly you may detect a faint blue glow 1/3 of the way up on the far right which is a reflection nebula called IC2169.
