Rosette Nebula And Cone Dark Nebula within Sh2-273

Rosette Nebula And Cone Dark Nebula within Sh2-273

In the large but dim constellation of Monoceros just east of Orion lies this huge nebulous duo with the famous Rosette Nebula in full bloom to the left and the massive Sh2-273 nebula shown here to the right. The Rosette is easily recognized as a large flower to the left with bright central stars. In this 5x8 degree very long exposure mosaic the two fat strands of nebulous material are clearly seen to connect the Rosette to the very large but dimmer Sh2-273 on the right. The nebula on the right contains 'The Christmas Tree' star cluster in the central more rich nebulous area. The Christmas Tree has it's trunk as a bright star in the center of this nebula and then dimmer stars outline the classic tree with flat bottom and the narowing tree growing up and to the left with bright treetop stars just before a small dark 'V' starts. The small knotch or dark inverted 'V' shape cuts into the upper left of the brighter central part of the full nebula and is called the 'Cone Nebula'. This picture today only contains the black and white data from the emission nebula and I hope to add color later.
