Scorpio's Collection of Wonders Near M4
Looking to the south in summer is the constillation of Scorpius which many people learn to recognize early as they learn the night sky. Around the heart of the scorpion lies quite a selection of varied and colorful deep sky objects shown in this 2.6 degree field with north being up and just a bit to the left. In the lower right we see the M4 globular cluster and in middle bottom of the frame another globular cluster, Ngc6144, makes a show. The wonderful golden glow is from a bright nebula lite up by the 7th brightest star which is the golden star Antares that is below this picture. We also have two blue colored reflection nebula with one in the lower left and one near upper left. To round out this wonderful collection the deep red glow of a thin cloud of hydrogen emissions is in the upper right. Enjoy the view!
