Running Chicken And The Sky Is Falling

Running Chicken And The Sky Is Falling

Well into the southern skies that are not visible from much of the northern hemisphere one can see 6 degrees to the west of the bottom of the famous 'Southern Cross' the Running Chicken Nebula. The Running Chicken which is also called the Lambda Centauri nebula. This nebula is composed of several nebula that may be part of the same larger nebulous structure. The Running Chicken's body is IC 2948 with the bright star near the center of the image being Lambda Centaurus. It is a bit hard to see this as a chicken with it's head to the right as it runs to the right with one foot down and another well out front. Why is it running? Well this picture also captures the large open cluster Ngc3766 at the top and perhaps this chicken felt the sky was falling although that is just my interpretation. The picture was taken from iTelescope.net gear located in Australia.
