Eta Carinae Nebula

Eta Carinae Nebula

In the southern night skies are many wondrous objects of the night sky such as the Eta Carinae Nebula shown in this 2.5 degree area where north is to the top. This nebula designated as Ngc3372 is so bright and large that it can be seen with the naked eye to be close to the size of the moon in the brightest central area. In the center just above the bottom dark V that splits this nebula you may see a slightly yellow and very bright star which is a very special star, Eta Carinae. The star Eta Carinae is felt to be a candidate for going super nova soon (within several thousand years) and recent Hubble space telescope pictures reveal what a wonderful this tiny object is in it's own right. Just to the right of Eta Carinae is a slightly dark area that was called the keyhole nebula because a hundred years ago it more closely resembled a keyhole dark shape. This huge nebula is a joy to behold in most any telescope and a 10 inch or larger telescope will bring out the fine details of the complex object as a real treat for those who can venture to southern locations such as Australia, Chile but can also be seen very low in the sky in Costa Rica. In the far upper right of this picture lies Ngc3324 sometimes called the Gabriela Mistral nebula because of the face like bright outline of a profile looking to the right that some have felt resembles a picture of the well known Chilean poet. The picture was taken from iTelescope.net gear located in Australia.
