The Tarantula Nebula

The Tarantula Nebula

The Tarantula Nebula as seen from Australia. The Tarantula Nebula is located in a huge dwarf galaxy that is called the Large Magellanic Cloud, or LMC, and cannot be viewed from northern skies. Although this nebula is in a different galaxy from our milky way galaxy the nebula has an apparent size that is about the same size as our moon is seen from Earth so it is a huge nebula. It is a treasure of the southern skies with it's highly complex wisps of nebula forming what some have felt resembles a tarantula. This picture also shows a dense open cluster called Ngc2100 that is also in the LMC.
